The Red Pyramid
Rick Riordan was born June 5th, 1964 in San Antonio, TX. As a child the first book he read for fun was Lord of the Rings, which he read at least 10 times. Riordan had intrest in Greek and Norse mythology in middle school.  Riordan sent his first work in for publication when he was 13, but did not get published until he had 2 short stories published in the UTSA Literary Magazine.  When in high school Riordan made an underground paper that made fun of the school and the football team (who later egged his car). Riordan's parents were teachers and artists. A  wannna-be guitar player, Riordan started college at North Texas State, known to be a great music school.  However, he transferred to the University of Texas and wound up majoring in English and history and later became a teacher.

Riodan's son Haley was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia when he was in second grade. Haley was interested in Greek mythology, so Riordan told him stories. When he ran out of myths Riodan made up stories of his own to tell his son. One of these characters turned to be Percy Jackson who, like Riordan's son, had ADHD and dyslexia.  Riordan believes that being different is not a bad thing but a sign of being very talented, which is what Percy learns about himself in "The Lightening Thief."

Although Riordan's firsts attempts were writing mysteries for adults he has found more success writing for children.  Although he loves to teach he has enjoyed writing books as his full time profession. "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" has been made into a major motion picture, although he didn't see it, preferring to keep his characters and the story in his head as he created them.

His idea to write a book about Egypt in "The Kane Chronicles" came from his interest in the Bible when Moses confronts Egyptian magicians."The Red Pyramid" is followed by "The Throne of Fire".  The third book in the series will be out in Spring 2012.

The best selling author is married and lives with his wife and two children, Haley and Patrick, one dog, and two black cats. When he is not writing he likes to read and swim and play games with his kids.
